Words of Silence performance at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

A performance by Katayoun Bahrami and Florencia Montefalcone at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, for the closing celebration of TARAVAT, the exhibition by Iranian-American artist Taravat Talepasand.

Words of Silence uses hand-painted silk as a language for what cannot be said out loud. The fabric moves with the body, covers it, reveals it, and finally releases it — the cloth carrying the words the performers withhold.

Made in dialogue with Talepasand's work on censorship, the female body and Iranian identity, the piece asks who is permitted to speak, who is asked to stay quiet, and what silence itself makes visible.
